Once you become a nurse, a completely new way of life opens up for you. Precisely what you do depends, of course, on your particular field of nursing and your professional assignment. Nurses who are just starting out need to be ready with basic healthcare equipment. The specific hospital or group for which one is working may have specific needs as well, but in general the requirements for nurses are more or less the same.
Aside from the various implements which differ in specific departments of a hospital, the standard nursing equipment is identical: a set of uniforms, proper shoes, a gait belt for moving patients, and some scissors to cut bandages with. A pen and a stethoscope are necessary too, as well as the specific implements needed within a given area of nursing.
A stethoscope is one of the first pieces of nursing equipment that a nurse is required to have. As a nurse, you will be using it for different exams and to verify patient’s condition. A stethoscope that is used on adults, children and newborns would be the best one to have.
The nurse’s uniform, commonly known as “scrubs,” is commonly a two-piece uniform. Sometimes it is accompanied by a matching cap. Not only do scrubs signify a professional who can inspire confidence in patients, but various colors of scrubs can be used to differentiate between nursing department from another. Scrubs also aid in the containment of germs and the upkeep of good hygiene at work.
Nursing shoes are another essential item, which has to be comfortable and durable. The nursing profession demands a lot of running around; thus, a pair of comfortable shoes is absolutely necessary. Also important is a watch that is easily readable and has a hand measuring the seconds. It is imperative that the watch is waterproof as the nurse might require washing hands and wrists frequently. A gait belt would also be needed for transferring the patients and while providing assistance to safe ambulation.
When you need to make quick notes or do regular upkeep on a chart, it’s easiest to have a pen that hangs on a loop around your neck than to constantly be rummaging in your pockets. Nurses might also find it handy to have access to a pocket-sized medical dictionary or nursing handbook, a pair of small scissors, and a calculator. The two most well used pieces of medical equipment for nurses is the stethoscope and the sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff).
A nursing kit contains all the items that a nurse typically will use in daily patient care. All these items have passed hard difficult safety standard testing. These tools help the doctors and nurses in monitoring, diagnosis or treatment of medical problems. The kit includes the following items: stethoscope, succors, measuring tape, ID badge holder, and blood pressure cuff.
Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human responses; and advocacy in health care for individuals, families, communities, and populations.
