Pediatric Nursing

Nursing is a great career choice if you have the desire to help people and are interested in the medical field. It takes a special person to become a nurse. The desire to want to help people is the foremost requirement for a nursing career choice.

From long ago when a nurse was thrust into the role by necessity, today nursing has become a more specialized field. There are countless branches of medicine in which a nurse can base her field of study. If pediatrics is an option that appeals to you, this branch of nursing can be a great career choice.

The role of a pediatric nurse is probably a more involved type of nursing than other types. When a child is sick the parents, grandparents, and siblings are more in the picture than when an adult is ill. The need to be with a child day and night when they are hospitalized is utmost in a parent’s mind. The nurse will interact with the family constantly during this time.

Becoming personally involved in a patient’s life is extremely hard not to do when it involves a child. Therefore, a person considering this line of nursing should take this into consideration before committing to becoming a pediatric nurse. This is especially true when it involves caring for a terminal patient. The fact that your patient is a child makes this a stressful situation that can be heartbreaking. However, your role as the caregiver for this child has to be handled in a professional manner.

That is not to say that you cannot interact with the child and be there for them when the necessity arises. Your patient could be a newborn who came into this world with its own set of problems from having a drug addict mother to being born prematurely. These babies are especially vulnerable and it is hard not to react to this situation. Keeping in focus that you are there to take care of their medical needs can be a hard thing to do.

However, this is also a very rewarding field. Seeing the modern marvels of medicine and watching a child go home after having survived a major illness gives you a sense of pride for your profession that is one of the greatest feelings you will ever have.

This type of nursing is also considered a teaching role. When children are hospitalized, your job as their nurse is naturally to take care of them. You will also teach the parent or grandparent how to care for this child’s needs once they are released from the hospital. This is just as important as caring for them while they are in the hospital because the care they get upon returning home can determine whether they have to be hospitalized again.

A career in pediatric nursing requires that you first earn your certification as a registered nurse. Depending on the state in which you live, the requirements may vary. Check with the state board of nursing for your state to find out exactly what you have to do. After you have completed all of your academic studies, you have to pass a certification exam. Following your successful certification, find a job in a hospital or clinic that will let you work in children. This is where you get the experience in pediatrics that you will need to go to the next step.

Find an internship in a hospital or clinic and sign up. This program can last from 3 months to a year. This gives you the one on one experience that you need to become a pediatrics nurse. While doing your internship, a good idea is to sign up for child psychology classes. This will be an immense help in teaching you how to interact with children and their parents.

After your internship is up, take the Certified Pediatrics nursing exam. Once you have passed this exam, do not think your learning experience is over. Good pediatric nurses have to take classes and attend seminars on a regular basis to keep up on new methods. Medical procedures and new medicines are always being updated so keeping up to date on this is necessary.

Finally, after you have passed these exams, be the best pediatric nurse you can be. The chance to make a difference in a child’ life is too important to be waste
