Numbness in Fingers Can Signal Carpal Tunnel or Repetitive Stress Injury

Are you dealing with numbness in the fingers of your hands? If so, this could be a sign of a couple of problems. Two of the most common problems related to finger numbness are carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injury. Both of these problems can cause this as well as other symptoms. So, here’s a closer look at both problems and a bit about them that will help you figure out which problem you may be dealing with.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome One problem that can cause numbness in the fingers is known as carpal tunnel syndrome. The carpal tunnel goes right through your wrist on the side of the palm and it works to keep the median nerve protected, as well as various tendons. When too much pressure is on this nerve, it can lead to problems, such as numbness.

-Possible Other Symptoms – Although numbness of the fingers is one symptom of carpal tunnel, you’ll find that there are many other symptoms as well. Often tingling occurs in the hand and fingers as well. Pain can be a symptom, and often occurs in the wrist, the fingers, and up into the arm. Weakness is another symptom that often comes along with carpal tunnel and it can even lead to problems dropping objects.

-The Risks – There are a variety of different risk factors that can make you more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome which you need to know about. Often occupations that involved making wrist motions that are repetitive can lead to the condition. Certain occupations, such as those that include working with computers, typing, and workers on assembly lines, can be more at risk. Pregnancy, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and even rheumatoid arthritis can make you more at risk as well.

Repetitive Stress Injury: Another problem which may lead to numbness of the fingers is repetitive stress injury. Such injuries essentially are those which may occur if you perform particular motions time and time again. In this situation, it includes repetitively using the hands and the wrists. Some injuries which may be included are bursitis, tendonitis, epicondylitis, tenosynovitis, and trigger finger.

-Causes – What exactly causes repetitive stress injuries to occur? Well, they can occur because of too many repetitions of certain motions. Also, doing motions that are unnatural to the wrist can also cause them. Muscle fatigue, over exerting, and the wrong posture can also be a cause of repetitive stress injuries.

Repetitive stress injuries can lead to many symptoms. While numb fingers are the best known of these symptoms, tingling and persistent pain centered in the hands and fingers can also result. Reduced hand strength, loss of flexibility, redness, and localized swelling may also be noticed.

Carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injuries can both lead to loss of feeling in your fingers. It may be a good idea for you to visit your doctor, so that he can tell which of these is the program and determine how to treat your difficulties.

Often improper ergonomic setup can be the culprit, with simple and inexpensive or even free solutions. Take a look at ergonomic resources for more tips!
