Is Your Home Germ Friendly?

I have pretty bad allergies, so when I moved from a house that had hardwood floors and allergen reducing carpeting to an older apartment that had wall-to-wall carpeting, I was concerned. Prior to moving in, I made sure that the carpets were thoroughly cleaned and vacuumed. However, simply vacuuming and cleaning a carpet is not the end-all-be-all when it comes to preventing germs from intruding your living space. One of the biggest areas for germs to collect is the bathroom and the kitchen. If you are prone to getting allergies, it is of the utmost importance that you make sure your house, apartment or room is as clean as it can be. However, you don’t want to use too many harsh chemicals (because that’s not good either). There are plenty of things you can do to reduce the amount of germs that’s spread around.

As you know, most common illnesses are caused by germs that are around us. While you can not eliminate 100 % of the germs that you will come into contact with, there are way that you can make your home healthier. So here are some quick and easy tips for making your home a less friendly environment for these illness breading house guests.

You might expect that one of the first places that you need to tackle in the fight for a germ “free” home is in the kitchen. But did you know that your cleaning may be making it worse? Things like cloth mops and sponges may actually be spreading more germs around your kitchen. And cloth mops are also a breeding ground for mold. To help cut down on the spread of these germs use paper towels and a mop with disposable heads or replaceable heads and be sure to change them frequently. When you do have to use a cloth mop or sponge, be sure to thoroughly clean it after each and every use by using antibacterial soap and soaking them in water hot enough to kill the germs, just be careful not to burn yourself in the process. Also, be sure to wash your hands, counter tops, and all utensils after preparing food, particularly raw meat, and use germ killing cleansers.

Your bathroom is another hot spot for germs; however they may not be coming from where you would think. One of the biggest breading grounds for germs in the bathroom is actually your tooth brush. Be sure that you replace it every 3 months, rinse it in hot water after use, and never share a toothbrush. Another danger for mold is your shower curtain. Be sure to keep this cleaned with cleanser specifically designed to kill mold and replace liners on a regular basis.

Other tips for around the house, be sure to take the trash out daily and to clean and disinfect around the trash can. Wash your hands on a regular basis, dust daily, and be sure to stay on top of dirty laundry to help keep your home a little less inviting for unwanted pests.

Kelp: The Miracle Plant

When we think about the different types of plants that are out there, often times, we do not even realize all of the healing qualities that these various plants have. For instance, did you know that the Aloe plant has a variety of uses other than just being aesthetically pleasing? For instance, you can use it as a house plant; you can use it to moisturize your skin; you can use it to heal cuts or wounds; you can use it to soothe sun burn and you can also use it as a laxative! The next time you go to the grocery store or to your local Lowes and/or Home Depot, make sure that you check out the plant section. Pay special attention to all of the various names and varieties of plant life that is there. If you’re curious enough, when you get back to your home, look up the various plants on the Internet. Most plants serve dual purposes other than just being a decoration in your home. Another great example of this is Rosemary. Rosemary is a neat little shrub-looking plant that can be utilized as a houseplant. It gives off a distinct and welcoming odor that smells great. It can also, however, be used to season food. Kelp is another great plant that serves different purposes.

Kelp, or seaweed, is a marine plant, a type of brown algae, that is often used in a variety of Japanese cuisine, particularly sushi and miso soup. It has won the name of “miracle plant” because of its tremendous therapeutic properties and high nutrient content.

Kelp is extremely rich in ocean minerals such as selenium and iodine which can help to boost the immune system. It is also flooded with tons of other vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, Calcium, Iron, Niacin, and phosphorus. Additionally, kelp is a great source of protein. It has an amazing and ever growing list of health benefits. And this marine plant has been widely used to help regulate thyroid conditions, helps to prevent heart disease and cancer, can boost development of the brain, assist in preventing osteoporosis, and can treat mineral deficiencies. Kelp dissolves fat tissues which aids with weight loss, alleviates arthritis pain, improves the functions of the liver and digestive system, and lowers cholesterol. It has even been shown to help reduce hair loss, stabilize hormonal balance, and benefit those suffering from impotence and anemia. Some research also suggests that kelp can suppress AIDS and kill the herpes virus.

With this amazing list of benefits, which seems to be constantly growing with more research, it is easy to see just why kelp is called the “miracle plant”. But how do you get enough kelp to reap these rewards? As mentioned before, kelp can be used in cooking; however, if you do not care for the taste of seaweed, there are many kelp supplements available at an affordable price from your local store, making kelp very easy to take. It is important to note that if you are already taking iodine supplements or thyroid medication you should consult a physician before taking kelp supplements.

Pilates: A Work Out For Mind and Body

If you are a big fan of yoga, you may just as well be a big fan of pilates. Pilates is very similar to yoga, using graceful movements and poses to work core muscle groups in your body. I first heard of pilates when I was a freshman in college almost eight years ago when I was taking a public speaking class. The topic for one of our speech assignments was to give a speech in which we demonstrate how to do something. For this one girl’s speech, she brought in this pilates video, yoga mat and a medicine ball and demonstrated a few basic exercises to the class on how pilates was done. I remember thinking that it seemed so simplistic…that is, until I tried it and found out otherwise. Pilates is actually very challenging! It is challenging to remain totally focused and calm while your inflexible body (my body is extremely inflexible) tries to flex and hold these difficult poses. Pilates is beneficial for a number of reasons. It improves your posture, strengthens your spine and tones your abs by focusing on your core. What’s even better is that it doesn’t require any major equipment; all you need is a mat or fluffy towel and maybe a medicine ball (optional).

Today we are so busy running around in a chaotic world, rushed to work, rushed in traffic…in fact it seems that all we ever do is rush around in this hectic rat race we have created around us. But, as a lot of health conscious people are starting to realize, sometimes we need to stop and slow down. Pilates is a great fitness program that no only helps us to improve and tone our physical well being, but gives that desperately needed time of slowing down and creates a fitness routine for the mind as well as the body.

Pilates has been around for decades and focuses on a fusion between mind and body to create more balance, grace and strength. With a focus on precise, flowing movements and breath, Pilates, in some ways, has a methodology similar to yoga; however it is extremely simple for anyone to do and delivers amazing results. The smooth, slow, and steady movements of the pilates routine serves to calm your mind and as your muscles become stretched and toned it eases away signs of stress which, of course, leads to more positive emotional health.

Of course, Pilates does not only help to strengthen and calm your mind. This fitness system will give you major results for strengthening your spine, improving posture, and toning your abs. And by focusing on giving you a stronger core and lengthening and conditioning your muscles your over all health benefits this simple fitness work out that virtually anyone can do regardless of their fitness level or time constraints. It is easy to begin and gives you great results. So take a few minutes out of that chaotic life and see how much better you feel with a total fitness program for both your mind and your body.
